Xiaomi is gearing up to unveil its inaugural self-developed mobile processor, the Xring, marking a significant stride towards reducing reliance on third-party chipmakers and enhancing control over its hardware-software integration. The official launch is anticipated in late May 2025.

Leadership and Development

Qin Muyun, a former Qualcomm executive, leads the Xring project, contributing valuable expertise to Xiaomi’s chip design endeavours. This initiative positions Xiaomi to compete directly with established semiconductor giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Technical Specifications

Manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm N4P process, the Xring processor avoids the newer 3nm technology to sidestep potential supply chain constraints and international sanctions that have impacted other companies.

The processor features an octa-core architecture.

  • 1x Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.2 for high-performance tasks

  • 3x Cortex-A725 cores at 2.6 for balanced performance

  • 4x Cortex-A520 cores at 2.0 for energy efficiency

For graphics processing, the Xring integrates the Imagination IMG DXT72 GPU operating at 1.3 GHz. Preliminary assessments suggest that the Xring’s performance could rival that of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

Strategic Implications

By developing its own processor, Xiaomi aims to enhance its autonomy in the smartphone sector, allowing for more seamless integration between hardware and software and enabling quicker, more tailored updates. This move underscores Xiaomi’s ambition to establish itself as a formidable player in the global mobile technology landscape.
