WhatsApp to Bring Built-In Document Scanner to Android
This document scanner was initially introduced to iOS users earlier this year, enabling them to scan and send documents directly within chats. The Android version appears to mirror the iOS implementation, allowing users to scan documents using their phone’s camera—no third-party apps required.
With this update, apps like CamScanner may soon become unnecessary for basic document scanning and sharing via WhatsApp.
It has two modes: manual and automatic.
According to details uncovered in the beta update, users will soon see a new “Scan document” option in the file-sharing menu. Tapping it will launch the phone’s camera with two capture modes: manual and automatic. Manual mode gives users full control over when to capture the image, ideal for precise alignment and framing. Automatic mode, on the other hand, detects document edges and captures the scan automatically, offering a quicker, hands-free experience.
Converts to PDF Automatically
After capturing the image, WhatsApp will automatically convert it into a PDF file, ready to be shared in individual chats or group conversations. The feature leverages native Android APIs, ensuring all scanning and conversion operations occur locally on the device. Files are only shared when explicitly sent by the user and remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
Availability
Although the feature is not yet available for public testing, its development has been confirmed. WhatsApp is expected to roll it out in a future update, with more details likely to follow soon.
