In a remarkable show of accountability, Karachi Traffic Police have fined 68 police vehicles under the city’s AI-powered e-challan system within the past 13 days. The violations include driving without seatbelts and using mobile phones while behind the wheel, according to 24NewsHD.
This move highlights Karachi’s growing commitment to fair traffic enforcement, ensuring that the law applies equally to everyone—including those in uniform. The city’s intelligent e-challan cameras monitor major intersections, automatically detecting and recording violations in real time.
A senior traffic official emphasized,
“This campaign proves that accountability applies to everyone, even within our own ranks.”
However, the system has also sparked legal debate. JI Karachi chief Munam Zafar, along with other petitioners, has filed a case in the Sindh High Court questioning the legality and accuracy of the e-challan system. The petition claims that fines are being sent to vehicle owners instead of actual drivers and urges the government to first improve road infrastructure and vehicle data verification before expanding the initiative.
Despite the controversy, Karachi’s e-challan project remains a key step toward smarter traffic management, aiming to promote safer roads and responsible driving across the city.
